When it comes to protecting lone workers, the strength and reliability of your mobile network can make all the difference. As legacy networks fade out across the UK, VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is fast becoming the smarter, safer standard. Let us tell you why....
The Slow Decline of 2G and 3G
Legacy networks like 2G and 3G are still hanging on in parts of the UK, but soon this will come to an end with all major UK mobile operators shutting down 3G services by the end of 2025. Vodafone has already completed its 3G switch-off, EE followed in early 2025, and O2/Virgin Media are next in line.
2G however is going to last longer, potentially until 2033 for Vodafone customers, but many providers are starting to pull the plug as early as 2025. That puts any lone worker device relying solely on 2G or 3G at risk of losing connectivity in the not-so-distant future.
VoLTE: Designed for Safety and Speed
VoLTE uses 4G to carry voice calls, bringing with it clearer sound quality, quicker call setup, and the ability to run voice and data at the same time. That means a lone worker can trigger an emergency call and still send real-time GPS updates or sensor data which is something 2G and 3G can’t manage.
It also means better reliability. VoLTE devices are built for modern networks, so they work more efficiently and drain less battery ideal for wearables or safety devices that need to last all shift long.
Why This Matters for Lone Worker Safety
Lone worker protection relies on fast, dependable communication. In an emergency, you can’t afford call delays, dropped alerts, or patchy signal. Devices using VoLTE are simply better suited for the job.
They also support the latest features, from fall detection and motion sensors to two-way voice and live GPS tracking—all running smoothly without interfering with each other.
VoLTE is central to delivering modern lone worker safety, especially in critical environments where every second counts.
Still a Place for Legacy?
If your workers operate in remote rural zones with weak 4G coverage, there may still be a case for 2G for now. It’s often better at penetrating buildings and travelling further. But with 2G already being phased out, it's not a futureproof solution.
Unless you’re actively working in those coverage blackspots, it’s time to move on. Relying on legacy tech risks leaving your team exposed as the networks they depend on disappear.
The Verdict
VoLTE is the clear choice for organisations serious about lone worker safety in 2025 and beyond. It delivers better call quality, real-time data, and the confidence that your devices will still work when legacy networks are gone.
If you're still using 2G or 3G-based safety solutions, now's the time to plan your upgrade. Don’t wait until your devices go dark to protect your employees.
